Programme Information

Since 2005, the Skilled Migrant Programme has assisted over 200 highly qualified migrants to develop their ability and to gain work in New Zealand.

The skilled migrants are already resident and able to work in New Zealand, however are unemployed or under-employed. Most concerning is that they have not been successful in getting work related to their tertiary qualifications and professional skills.

This award winning programme is a partnership between Victoria University, the Rotary Club of Wellington and The Johnson Group. The skilled migrants spend 5 weeks at Victoria University learning about workplace communication styles and Kiwi culture. Once placed in a 6 weeks unpaid internship they put what they have learnt and their existing skills into action.

- Could you do with an extra pair of skilled hands?

- Do you have a project that needs attention?

The other bonuses can include; an increased shared understanding of the issues facing migrants; improved team capability from new skills and fresh ideas; and the knowledge you have made a practical difference through this unique employment initiative.

It’s simple. All you need to do is provide a team member to support the intern on the job - so that they can maximise their experience of working within your team. We look after the rest. There is no obligation to the intern following the internship. However if you subsequently do decide to offer them employment, you are welcome to negotiate directly with the intern.

The Johnson Group  match the most suitable skilled migrant to your opportunity. This means that both you and the intern get maximum value from the programme. If you would like to know more, think you can offer an internship, or know someone who might be able to help, please don’t hesitate to contact Claudia Gonzalez by email or phone 04 473 6699.
