Singers to listen for 2016
POSTED 30 AUGUST 2016
Another very successful concert was held on 26 August 2016 as a celebration of wonderful young talent. The Rotary Club of Wellington featured four outstanding young Opera Singers, two already on their way to stardom and two with the potential to be among our best and brightest.
Wellingtonian Jonathan Abernethy and Anna Dowsley from Melbourne joined Katherine McIndoe and Jarvis Dams in a programme of Mozart and the romantic French repertoire. The concert was held in association with the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, and the singers were sponsored by Lexus of Wellington. The pianist was Terence Dennis, arguably the leading accompanist in New Zealand.
A capacity audience of 200 at St Andrews on the Terrace enjoyed canapés and wine before the music, and a charity auction to assist the Foundation in mentoring young singers; this year including Katherine and Jarvis. An original paining by Dame Kiri and the cover of her shooting script from Downton Abbey were sold in the auction. This year the concert was a fundraiser for the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute for cancer, led by Dr Swee Tan, which will benefit from the generosity of the audience.
Everyone agreed it was a memorable event, enabling the talent of the singers to be enjoyed to the full. The melodies lingered long after the last notes faded to huge applause.
