Martin Taylor -“Fish & Game and its advocacy for fresh water”
Martin Taylor, CE of NZ Fish and Game, focused on the advocacy role of the organisation, in particular talking about pollution caused by dairy farming. A major cause of problems of pollution from dairying is a big increase of dairying in environments that are not suited to it, in terms of soil quality and rainfall. The irrigation and heavy use of fertiliser required has a big impact on local waterways. Although 98% of farm streams are now fenced off, government environmental standards and and poor administration by local councils cause major pollution problems to continue.
