First introduced to Wellington in 2009 by the Rotary Club of Wellington and held annually ever since, Jumbo Tennis is a fun, quick-fire, team event, played with oversized racquets. Played to the same rules as Table Tennis (players take alternate hits), Jumbo Tennis 7s has captured the attention of the corporate world for its entertainment, hospitality, camaraderie and support for local charities.
“Our goal is to raise $30,000 and have a heap of fun while we’re doing it” says William Sommerville, the man behind the idea. The Rotary Club of Wellington donates the funds raised at each event to charity. Events held between 2011 and 2016 have raised between $20,000 and $30,000 each and beneficiaries have included Autism NZ Wellington Branch, Island Bay Marine Education Centre, Wellington Free Ambulance's Operation Heartbeat, Wellington City Mission, Malaghan Institute, and Wellington Junior Tennis. 2017 beneficiaries will be Menzshed Wellington, Wellington Children's Hospital, Island Bay Marine Education Centre and Wellington Junior Tennis.
40 four person teams play for the Jumbo Tennis 7s Cup and many other prizes in a seven minute game round robin competition. Best tennis, best dressed and best supporters are just some of the prizes on offer. Recovery periods are plentiful and players can take full advantage of the complimentary court-side food and beverages.
The next Jumbo Tennis tournament is being held on the 4th of March 2017. For further information and bookings, click here.
A franchising opportunity
Jumbo Tennis is now available to all Rotary clubs in New Zealand as a new and engaging fundraising activity. As we know, one of the difficulties many Rotary clubs now face is how to run a fundraising activity that inspires members is fresh, fun and most importantly - generates a good financial return for the effort applied to the event! It is for these reasons the Rotary Club of Wellington (RCW) hosts its annual Jumbo Tennis event in New Zealand.
Jumbo Tennis has proven to be a fun, practical and lively way for our club to consistently generate significant financial returns that are then available for charitable purposes and this event is now available for your club to use as well!
